A Photo Blog Of 3 Chilean Cities: San Pedro de Atacama, Santiago & Pucon

In Chile we visited three very different regions: San Pedro de Atacama – a desert oasis with Salt Lakes, Geysers & Grazing Llamas; Santiago – a huge city where we found a bit of culture and a lot of nightlife; Pucon – a lush area in the lakes district with waterfalls, hot springs & a huge volcanoe towering above everything. We hope this photo blog gives you a taste of these 3 incredible Chilean cities!

This is one of my favorite images. At sunset, the salt lake looked like an oasis in a dream. I like the way the chunks of salt all bunch up together to appear like a crashing wave. I also enjoy the way the moon relates to the salt.
A beautiful desert with salty, salty lakes. It was such a pleasure to swim in one – actually just to lay in the water – it felt as if there was an invisible bed in the lake.

When we first got the the geysers, I was a bit let down as there wasn’t much action. But suddenly the temperature/pressure reached the perfect point & the geysers just started spewing out steam and hot water. The way the scene looked with the early morning sunlight was just amazing!

I knew it could be cold in the desert when the sun is down, but -10C was not what I imagined it to be! It was FREEZING but it was worth it. The place looked like a habitat for a huge dragon – the water was boiling and rising up in fountains. Thanks to the geysers we had boiled eggs and hot chocolate as a breakfast treat!

The tour guides all told us not to do this and warned us that it is very dangerous, but I’m sure we weren’t the only ones to make some sort of “king-of-the world-pose” like this. One of the tour guides was super hard-core about not getting up close to the steam, and came over to ask us, along with some other guys, “Are you stupid?” I answered her that the images wouldn’t look stupid at all!
The guide told us not to come close to the geysers… But we were too curious to follow the rule.

This is the exact image that I create when I dream about being in the desert –sand dunes, camel-like animals, dry land & a small oasis in the middle of it all.
Can you believe that the desert can be so beautiful?!

What a big, ugly city Santiago is. This is the greenest and most charming area of the city, and it still checks out as ‘just okay’ in my book. Besides the nightlife, I’m not really sure why anyone would make a point to visit Santiago.
I do not agree that Santiago is an ugly city – it has pretty mountains in the background and the city center is clean and nice, but I have to admit that I didn´t see much from the telescope.

Vasilisa wanted to take this picture, and I told her that everyone takes this type of picture and they never turn out well. I guess I was wrong though, because I sort of like it.

Pucon was my favorite place. There were hot springs that were open all night with 7 different natural swimming pools, mountains with snow caps, forests in all kinds of colors, and waterfalls falling into the rivers and lakes.

This image really brings me in to nature and rural ranch-life. I enjoy the way the colors and lines relate to each other.
The smoking volcano was quite a view! You can hike it and then go down on a snowboard.
